How to Be Happy More Every Day– 10 Powerful Techniques for Creating Happiness – written by Alan Anderson

We all want more happiness in our life, but very few people know how to create a state of sustained happiness.  For many, life is a constant battle with struggle and pain sprinkled with moments of happiness and joy. For me, it was one of those life changing moments that led me on the road to self-improvement. Throughout this journey, I found many ways to make happiness a more regular state. That’s why I want to share the ten techniques I use to create happiness in my life every day.

However, before we jump straight into using these ideas, it’s important to understand why these techniques work. For me, the moment of transformation came when I was recovering from a major health crisis. During this recovery I came across a quote by the great Chinese Sage, Lao Tzu.

He said; If you are depressed, you are living in the past and if you are anxious you are living in the future. When you are at peace, you are living in the present. This powerful statement made me realize that all my own stress and anxiety was created by fear of the future and holding onto the past. I was determined to find practical ways to live in the present moment so that I could experience more happiness.

Generally, the techniques I use are all focused on bringing you into a state of mindfulness which is where happiness lives. In fact, the reason most of stumble around in pain and feeling only fleeting moments of happiness, is that we expect to find happiness outside of us.

If you read the works of any great sage, one of the common theme is that happiness is not found outside us but within. So, in order to find long-term happiness, we must learn to live our life in the present moment. This means finding ways to live without fear or anxiety about the future and without clinging to the past. Once we master this, life becomes full of opportunity and happiness flows more often.

How to be Happy Tip #1- Gratitude

If you want to feel happier each day, take time out to write down in a journal all the wonderful people, experiences and things that you are grateful for. Read your list and with take a moment to notice how each listed item makes your feel.

By flooding your thoughts with a daily dose of positive emotions, your focus shifts towards bringing even more positive events and opportunities into your life which allows you to grow in happiness, by leaving the past behind and ignoring any fear of the future.

Try to add to this list every day. By reviewing and adding to your list you build a strong attitude of gratitude which manifests even more great things in your life. This is often called the Law of Attraction. Very simply, you tend attract what you put out into the world.

So, by focusing on the positive things in your life, you attract more of them to you.

How to be Happy Tip #2- Power of the Journal

I found out the hard way that stress and happiness don’t exist together. You may find fleeting moments of happiness living a life full of stress. However, to find sustained happiness, it’s important to find ways to reduce stress and replace it with your bodies natural state of deep relaxation.

In this state you also live in the moment and become mindful and reflective. One of the best tools to help you achieve this state is to use a daily journal.

Journal writing not only allows you to unload your busy thoughts onto paper, but also allows you to capture creative ideas. Also, your journal is a great way of capturing your short, medium and long-term goals and action plans. How to be Happy Tip #3- Balance

Using tip #2 leads on to a very powerful tool for creating happiness. In my own experience, I allowed my life to get totally out of balance. In fact, I was only focused on working harder and harder.

Unfortunately, this led to failures in nearly every other aspect of life including relationships, money, family, career development and health.I can’t explain how wonderful it feels to bring every aspect of your life into balance without apparent effort.

The starting point to achieve this is regular self-reflection and review. This is not in-order to beat yourself up, but to allow you to develop action plans for every part of your life. Self-review and self-awareness are two key factors for making positive change in your life.

This is all about understanding very clearly what you want to change in your life. Self-reflection works perfectly when you write in a personal journal every day. Once we are clear about what we want to have, be and do with our life, we can convert this into a life plan. That’s where the next tip of smart goals comes into play.

How to be Happy Tip #4- Plan Clear Future

Every business that succeeds does so through developing a clear vision coupled with careful planning. If you want to be happy, it’s important to get very clear about what that means to you and your life.

So, from tip #3 you will understand where your life is out of balance. Now it’s important to create clear goals and plans to make change to each aspect of your life. Having a clear vision and written smart goals is a great way of minimizing the impact of fear and anxiety about the future.

Taking small steps every day towards your preferred future is a powerful way to create happiness in your life right now.

 How to be Happy Tip #5 – Expectations

I meet so many people that have wonderful dreams. However, most give up well before they can ever be realized. The key to happiness and success is to be flexible and adaptable. If you have rigid expectations and they are not met, you are bound to feel unhappy. So, learn to change your plans if needed. If you find you are blocked, then work around the challenge by adapting your plan.

Also, learn to filter your dreams to make sure they are truly achievable and actionable. Unrealistic expectations and happiness do not go hand in hand. So, take a regular reality check and look for alternatives.

A word of warning. Having realistic expectations is not an excuse to limit your goals or to give up on them. The key is to recognize challenges as an opportunity to explore new methods to achieve the same result.

How to be Happy Tip #6- Affirming You

When our mind gets jumbled and stressed, its so easy to get overwhelmed by fear of future events. Also, its too easy to obsess about past events that have create negative thought patterns which are often associated with strong negative motions.

This can be very toxic to our mental and physical health. It can also force us to live our lives in a very small comfort zone. I know this first hand. Some time ago, I allowed mental stress to rob me of my health and well-being. One of the most powerful tools I used to regain my mental and physical health was by using affirmations.

Using affirmations every day allows you to replace the toxic thoughts and emotions with positive ones.  As you retrain your brain and subconscious mind to focus on what you want to become and achieve, the impact of the past and fear of the future slowly drop away.

How to be Happy Tip #7- The Power of Service

One universal law that is little understood is the law of service. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of focusing totally on yourself.

However, we all find happiness from positive connection with other human beings. Just like the power of gratitude, giving service seems to multiply your own results in life. That’s why I focus on giving service and giving help to everyone I meet in both my personal and business life.

Not only does giving service to others feel good, but that service is returned ten-fold a personal prosperity. As the bible says…Give and you shall receive.

How to be Happy Tip #8- Forgive

When we hold on to grudges, happiness seems to disappear. When I felt mistreated,  I always held onto strong negative emotions and found these hard to give up.

Not only does this rob you of your happiness, but it can be very toxic to your health and well-being. As well as creating unwanted stress, it can leave you in emotional turmoil. For me, learning to forgive people was one of the biggest challenges to finding happiness.

Demonstrating forgiveness is a powerful tool for personal transformation. You find that you grow when you develop your vision for your future which allows you to let go of the past.

Finally, it becomes clear that everyone is trapped in their thoughts and emotions. We are all human. As such, we all make mistakes and may hurt others knowingly or unknowingly. Forgiveness is possible when be finally recognize that we don’t have to carry this hurt with us.

The more we become pro-active in creating the life we want, the more it is possible to let go of the past. I found that the more I used all of these tools, the easier forgiveness became. So, the more you forgive and move towards your positive future, the more you break free of the shackles of past emotional hurt.

How to be Happy Tip #9- Mindfulness

Mindfulness and meditation are both powerful gateways to creating happiness from the inside-out. It was the great Sage Horace who said “Rule Your Mind before it Rules You.”

Our minds impact every aspect of our life and yet we tend to allow them to run on auto-pilot.

This can allow us to become fearful of the future and overwhelmed by past events. For me, mindfulness allows me to let go of overwhelming thoughts and emotions. By shifting your mind out of its thought stream, you take on the role of the observer of thoughts. By becoming the observer, it is possible to see the strong emotion we attach to thought. Also, we can observe that these emotions and  thoughts have little or no basis in reality. The more we observe out thoughts, the less impact they have on how we feel.

Break Free

So, if you feel trapped by powerful thoughts and emotions, mindfulness is a great way of breaking free.

Like many mind techniques, it seems to be too simple to have any effect. However, mindfulness practice allows you to step away from your thoughts and more importantly the strong emotions they bring up. When you become the observer of your thoughts and emotions, you break out of the prison of destructive thoughts and emotions.

Along with mindfulness, simple meditation is one of the most well researched methods for reducing stress and anxiety. So, if you want more happiness in your life, give yourself the gift of time to practice meditation every day.
